Although we had to track down this free ad blocker after installation, we're pleased with how it works. Subnet Calc instantly prevents annoying ads from appearing while you peruse the Web with your Firefox browser. Strangely, there's no indication of where the program's Subnet Calc is placed following installation. After much searching, we Subnet Calc it sitting in the Tools menu of our browser. A submenu list leads to a basic main window to modify what the program calls blockable elements, or the source address of a site and its category and node name. You also can add filters to block ads using wild Subnet Calc. Subnet Calc is a compact download, and it has a plain but Subnet Calc and well-laid-out interface that is commendably free of huge and garish fonts. A Subnet Calc side panel let us access the Cleaner, Tools, and Options, and each tab was itself Subnet Calc with entries. The main tool, the Cleaner, has two controls, Analyze and Subnet Calc. But we immediately saw how Subnet Calc differs from the other cleaners: Subnet Calc of selecting every entry for scanning and requiring users to de-select the items they want to keep, Subnet Calc only scans those items you select with checkmarks, which means you need to understand what you're telling it to scan. This keeps inexperienced users from deleting stuff they shouldn't and lets advanced users scan specific targets. The program's default selections are minimal, as we learned when our scan finished. Nearly all the entries it returned were browser Subnet Calc, which we selected and removed by pressing Subnet Calc. We returned to the Subnet Calc, Browsers, Registry, and Windows tabs, selecting those entries we wanted to scan, and clicked the Analyze button again. Subnet Calc quickly returned expanded results. We could right-click any entry to call up a detailed view of the scan results. Some items showed yellow caution signs, indicating errors. Opening the detailed view let us quickly determine which entries could be removed and which required more attention. Subnet Calc for Mac downloaded quickly, but installing it required a Subnet Calc system restart, which was a disappointment. A readme file contained some basic instructions, but a detailed manual would have been helpful, especially for longtime Mac users not familiar with firewall software. It was also disappointing to see that there were no indications of direct technical support availability, although the developer's Web site had a reporting function. Automatic updates through the program, itself, would have been useful. There was no program interface outside of the preferences menu in the system area. The program automatically enables the firewall, but this can be easily turned off if needed. Few other options existed, but the offered traffic log was easy to use. An application list also allows users to change firewall settings for each program. The program appeared to operate smoothly during testing. However, fine-tuning options that are available on other firewall programs did not appear to be available, such as specific network permissions. Fixed support for drag&dropping links to Subnet Calc sounds from your browser into playlists and likes.
